Lymphedema
The lymphatic system produces cells and antibodies, destroys red blood cells, and lymph circulation. Lymph is a discourse used to describe the interstitial silver that goes into the lymphatic system. The interstitial fluid consists of protein, fat, cell debris, and water. The lymphatic system is divided into to forges; the dilettantish layer and the cloudy layer. The trivial layer vessels are in the subcutaneous tissues and the deep layers are in the blood vessels. The superficial layers provide fluid for the pare down and subcutaneous tissues and the deep layer provides fluid to the muscles, tendon sheaths, nervous tissue, the periosteum, and joints.
Lymphedema is found mostly in the extremities, but it also can be found in the head, neck, trunk, inner organs, and genetalia. If it goes untreated, it can cause complications such as repeated infections, decrease local immunity to needed area, mobility limitations which can affect a persons ability to perform ADLs (activities of daily living); these are considered severe complications. Acute lymphedema is pitting of the extremities that are relieved by elevation of the extremities, but it can lead a chronic problem that the infected area becomes enlarged and deformed.
The skin takes on a change also. The causation of this motive is the protein fluid build up in the interstitial fluid is not released from the body properly.
A head to toe scrutiny is performed with primary focus on the skin. The skin is assessed for the texture, pitting status, color, and deep skin folds, which is a known sign of the zodiac of lymphedema. A sign that lymphedema is chronic is the Stemmer sign. This is test is done by checking skin turgor and not able to pinch the skin on the dorsal side of the second toe of the affected extremity or the between the thumb and the forefinger.
