Introduction

Animals are use every day in society for military personnely different purposes and there are respective(a) issues relating to how, why and what they are used for. In this assignment, I leave alone look at the use of animals within a menagerie purlieu and the welfare issues connected to keeping them in incarceration. I aim to investigate the pros and cons of zoos and whether or not they can be morally and ethically justified.

Animals have been kept by man since early civilisation for food and farming. The first zoos were menageries and were mainly used for the entertainment of the rich. The earliest records of animals being kept in enslavement are in ancient Egypt, where drawings can be prepare on the walls of a wealthy noblemans tomb (Bostock, 1993, p7). There are indications of animals being kept in imprisonment throughout history. They were menageries and they were used predominantly used for entertainment purposes. The and educational purpose of a menagerie was to give masses the opportunity to see animals they wouldnt otherwise be commensurate to see. In 1828, Sir Stamford Raffles opened London Zoo as the first scientific zoo.





There were previously no laws to cheer the animals against cruelty until The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 (The ZLA).
