In the novel My Antonia, the author, Willa Cather, uses the channel as a sign to contrast the successful American dreams of Jim and Antonia with the unsuccessful dream of Mr. Shimerda finally showing that the American dream is not achievable by all. At the beginning of the novel, Jim came to B wishing Hawk as an orphan to live with his grandparents after the recent death of his parents. After personateting off the aim, Jim must take a long move ride through the dark dedicate plains to reach his grandparents house. As Jim looked at the openness of the land, Jim realized the road symbolized the beginning of his in the altogether journey, I had left their spirits behind me. The wagon shaken on, carrying me I knew not whither. (8) Jim understands that there is no way to get his previous life back, but learns he must reverse successful to achieve his own American dream. At the destination of the novel, Jim becomes a successful lawyer. He reflects on the road in which he traveled upon reaching Black Hawk with Antonia. This was the road in which Antonia and I came on that night when we got off the train at Black Hawk and were bedded down in the straw, wondering children, being taken we knew not whither (238) The long open road symbolizes the road to his dream.
This road is open with opportunity, but it takes ofttimes time and hard work to receive the glory and wealthiness at the end, success which is achieved by Jim.
The Shimerda family from Bohemia came to Black Hawk along with Jim. Mr. Shimerda moved his whole family to Black Hawk in rescript to give his eldest son Ambrosch, a better life. As all the Shimerdas started on the road towards their American dreams, Mr. Shimerdas dream is unsuccessful.
