This painting was a large devotional altarpiece for Federico Montefeltro, who is the duke of Urbino. Inside this magnificent Christian church, is Federico, the balding knight in full suit of armor, kneel down berfore the Madonna and Child in strict professionalfile. She is praying over the Christ Child who lies slumbery on her lap. Surrounding her in a semicircle are six saints and four angels. Some of the characters are gazing outside at the mantrap of the painting, and one saint is pointing his finger towards the Mother and Child, as if inviting the viewer in to witness the dimension. The is something flattering about Renaissance painting because the scene, on with the convincing depictions of space and depth, makes the viewer feel involved with the religious rite and feel like as if it was actually happening in their presence.
Piero uses perspective illusions so that the pure white egg hanging from a gold chain somewhere far foundation appear suspended directly over Mary’s head. The elliptic shaped of the egg is also echoed by the oval shape of Mary’s head. Ostrich egg are usually found in Christian churches and they symbolize Mary’s fertility and the miracles of Christ’s birth and resurrection. The boilers suit mood of the scene is rather quiet, solemn and melancholic scorn the brilliant colors and radiant bright light which lit up the interior of the church.
